Organizing an event can take a lot of time, hard work and money. If you don’t achieve the results you hoped for it can be very disappointing. There are multiple reasons why your next event might fail, we’ve listed the most common causes and some tips to avoid these mistakes.

1. You provide the same approach for everyone

Defining your target audience is very important when you are organizing your event, not everyone expects the same things. Try to avoid one-size-fits-all approaches. Taking a general approach to event planning is one of the main reasons why events fail.

Let your potential attendees vote in online polls for speakers, session topics and more. This will give you a good idea of the relevance of your chosen content to your audience.

2. The venue is not suitable for your audience

One of the main mistakes is to over- or underestimate the number of attendees and the space required. A way to adapt to this is to choose a flexible venue, with a range of different spaces.

For example, you have set up a gig of your favourite band but only a small part of the tickets got sold. A half empty room can lead to a lack of atmosphere for the band and attendees. If your venue offers a smaller space, your problem is solved.

Another important factor is the transportation. Think of how your attendees will go to the event. If they are going by car, ensure that there is enough parking. If they are going by public transportation, make sure your location is easily accessible for them.

3. You don’t provide enough opportunities for networking

People don’t just show up at your event to consume your provided content, they generally also want to network with other attendees, make new business contacts or friends.

Don’t forget the importance of scheduling some networking opportunities into your program like, for example, a “networking drink.” It might also be a good idea to take an active role in helping people make useful connections. You can do this by setting up an online community before the event to help them network and arrange meetings.

4. You are ignoring technology

Wi-Fi is a non-negotiable must-have. If not everyone attending can access and enjoy free Wi-Fi you will not only disappoint your attendees, you will also jeopardize the reach and impact of your event.

Modern day people are interactive, they share their thoughts, opinions and experiences as they happen. If you want them to be interactive about your event while they are there, you should provide Wi-Fi.

5. You are doing the same thing as you did last year

Who wants to see the same speaker with the same keynote year after year? It’s important to keep your event fresh and relevant. Allowing attendees to have an input in the program ( see point 1 ) is a good way to make sure that this happens.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t do some things again. If you had a successful speaker last year, invite him again. Let him do his session for first-time attendees and an “advanced” session for returning people.
